Sue Hatzimichalis Post-Graduate Renal Nursing Scholarship

In 2024, the Dialysis and Transplant Association of Victoria Incorporated (DATA) established a nursing scholarship titled the Sue Hatzimichalis Post-Graduate Renal Nursing Scholarship.

This scholarship is named in honour of Sue Hatzimachalis, a long-time carer for her husband with end stage kidney disease. Sue was a dedicated, long-time member of DATA, serving as President and Secretary. This scholarship is in recognition of her commitment to patients with kidney disease and their families.

The Sue Hatzimichalis Post-Graduate Renal Nursing Scholarship program provides a unique opportunity to actively support and develop the nurses directly caring for patients and their carers on a daily basis whilst simultaneously building relationships between healthcare services and the Dialysis and Transplant Association of Victoria Inc. providing a sustainable opportunity for the recruitment of new members and the marketing of D.A.T.A. and its support services.

This Program will:

  • Deliver a capacity and skill building opportunity for existing nurses working in renal to understand the complexities associated with renal disease at a specialist level by enabling them to undertake a post graduate renal course;
  • Provide an opportunity for a registered nurse who may not otherwise be able to afford to undertake post-graduate study to do so by providing the financial means for post-graduate study;
  • Create new partnerships between D.A.T.A. and health services in Victoria chosen by D.A.T.A increasing the opportunity for membership growth of D.A.T.A.;
  • Provide D.A.T.A. with an opportunity to support its members in a new and innovative way by investing in the healthcare services that they engage with on a regular basis;
  • Provide an opportunity for D.A.T.A. to offer health services with in-services on DATA programs and support offered in the hope that they may transfer this knowledge to patients and their carers ultimately increasing member numbers;
  • Provide an opportunity for the scholarship recipients to engage with D.A.T.A. through Shoestring articles communicating the impact of the scholarship on their care of those with renal disease and their carers;
